Blue Origin says its Blue Moon MK1 lunar lander, Endurance, has cleared another qualification milestone, completing a shock test that recreates the jolt of separating from New Glenn's second stage. The company positioned 21 accelerometers around the vehicle to characterize the shock response, and reported that all components exceeded survivability requirements. Next on the test campaign is full vehicle separation testing.
Shock testing verifies that the vehicle is able to survive one of the more punishing structural loads a spacecraft faces. It arrives in milliseconds as clamp bands or separation bolts fire and send pulses through the structure far faster than typical vibration or acoustic loading. Clearing it with margin on flight hardware is a comforting data point ahead of MK1's actual flight.
But this is where things are a bit unfortunate. Endurance's New Glenn, the only launch vehicle rated to carry it, has been grounded since May 28, when an anomaly during a static-fire test destroyed the booster and severely damaged Launch Complex 36. Rebuilding the launch structure is underway. Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp has said the company aims to return New Glenn to flight before the end of 2026, but the recovery effort has reshaped the pad itself: rather than rebuilding LC-36A as it was, Blue Origin is moving to a "next-gen" upgrade. The new approach is a horizontal/vertical hybrid configuration, mating the stages horizontally in the Integration Facility before using a crane to perform the vertical breakover at the pad.
This is not an idea born from desperation. Instead, this concept of operations was originally developed for the larger 9x4 New Glenn variant.
