On May 28, 2026, a static-fire test ahead of New Glenn's fourth flight ended in disaster. The rocket exploded on the launchpad in an enormous fireball visible for more than a hundred miles, destroying the vehicle and inflicting heavy damage on Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Importantly, it currently is Blue Origin's only launchpad for the heavy-lift rocket. Fortunately, Space Force and Blue Origin's safety rules worked as intended, and no loss of life or injuries were reported, since the area had been evacuated beforehand as is standard for hotfire tests.
How bad was the damage?
Initial satellite images looked grim, but the picture has improved since. The explosion caused serious damage including the collapse of a lightning tower and destruction of the transporter-erector. This complex structure used to move New Glenn to the pad and raise it upright. However, crucially, the propellant farm, oxygen, liquid hydrogen, and LNG tanks are all in good shape. CEO Dave Limp recently called it good luck since these are very long lead items that would otherwise take a long time to replace. The water tower also survived. The main support tower was damaged but can be repaired in place rather than torn down and rebuilt.
Even better, the flight hardware escaped unscathed: Three Glenn Stage 2 vehicles and one Glenn Stage 1 booster were sitting in the integration facility at the time and avoided damage, giving Blue Origin a ready inventory of hardware to work with once the pad reopens.
Cleanup turned out to be faster than anticipated. All wreckage from the rocket and surrounding infrastructure was cleared in just nine days. That's notably quicker than comparable accidents, such as SpaceX's 2016 Falcon 9 pad explosion, which took roughly twice as long to clear.
Rather than simply replacing what broke, Blue Origin is using the rebuild to change how it operates. The company will adopt an alternative vertical concept it had already been developing, integrating and erecting rockets directly on the pad instead of relying on a transporter-erector. This is a choice that'S conceptually similar to how SpaceX handles Starship.
The pad will still be rebuilt for the current 7×2 configuration; Blue Origin is not using this as an excuse to jump straight to the larger 9×4 variant.
So when does New Glenn fly again?
Blue Origin's official target, repeated consistently by both Bezos and Limp, is to return to flight before the end of 2026. Many industry observers had predicted it would take at least a year to rebuild the pad, so this is an aggressive goal.
LC-36 isn't just about commercial satellites. Blue Origin's future builds on this. Blue Moon, its lunar lander, is part of NASA's Artemis program, and an extended outage had even led NASA to consider "decoupling" Blue Moon from New Glenn. Limp suggested that won't be necessary, with the robotic Blue Moon Mark 1 lander still planned to fly early next year.
For now, all eyes remain on Cape Canaveral. If Blue Origin hits its year-end target, it will mark one of the fastest pad recoveries in spaceflight history. We keep our fingers crossed!
